The main function of the botanical gardens is to preserve biodiversity. This goal is reached thanks to different modalities: environmental education, scientific research, field research on many endangered vegetal species and not.
The idiomatic expression "conservazione ex suit" (preservation from site), realized through a static preservation of collections, indicates the preservation of genetic resources out of their natural environment.
Every year the botanical gardens publish an index of seeds (Index seminum). These seeds are exchanged with associated institutions, so that the diffusion of endangered vegetal species is guaranteed.
The first "Delectus seminum" of the botanical garden of Camerino was published in the year 1889 by Giovan Battista De Toni.
